Story Time with The Sisters

The importance of Drag Story Time…

Diversity, equity, and inclusion are at the core of our values at The Arts Asylum. Those values are essential to our ability to uphold our promise of providing a safe place to create. We believe those values must be instilled at a young age and are honored to house and co-produce monthly Story Time with The Sisters. The City of Fountains Sisters are a crucial community partner for us as well as valued members of our extended Arts Asylum Family.

We believe, along with many others, that Drag Story Hours are a powerful tool for nurturing creativity in young minds, breaking down stereotypes, and creating inclusive spaces where all children, including LGBTQ+ kids and teens, those with LGBTQ+ parents or family members, and anyone who feels different, can see themselves reflected and celebrated. There is no confusion about story time or its place in early literacy, childhood education, and family joy. Story Time has been, and likely will always be, a staple in early childhood education and generally consists of picture books, songs, and games. Our story time is no different than those you might find at your local library or in a pre-school environment.

Our agenda is simple, Story Time is a visible place of inclusion for LGBTQ+ families. Hosting Story Time says: LGBTQ+ family belongs and are welcome here, LGBTQ+ staff belong, and we will have books of all kinds about LGBTQ+ culture and history along side stories of magical creatures and kindness. The Arts Asylum wants everyone to feel that it is their space—because it is. We are a safe place for EVERYONE to create and learn. Story Time is an invitation, a reflection, a celebration, and an honoring. In addition to being an important and beautiful art form, drag is a beautiful and fierce act of resistance and resilience, in the face of very real potential dangers.
